Upper GI, Esophogram or Small Bowel Series

The day before the exam:

Do not eat, drink or chew after 9 p.m. the night before. No smoking!

During the exam:

You will be asked to drink a flavored liquid after which a series of x-ray pictures will be taken. You may be required to stand, lie down and move from side to side so that different parts of your bowel can be photographed clearly. For a small bowel series you may be asked to stay for 1-2 hours until the contrast liquid is all the way through the bowel.

After the exam:

Your doctor will receive the results.
